Alto and Bass Flute Repertoire Catalogue

compiled by Christine Potter and Carla Rees

In this catalogue you will find solo pieces, chamber music and orchestral/band music that includes alto and bass flute. It does not include music that consists of combinations of more than four flutes unless the alto or bass is a featured solo instrument. If you are looking for flute choir music, we suggest you try Flute World (fluteworld.com.)

This catalogue is purely a listing of pieces. If you are interested in purchasing some of the music you find here, contact your local music store. They will want to know the title, composer, instrumentation and publisher. Some of the publishers are shown merely as an abbreviation. Most music stores will know what those abbreviations mean. If you do not have a store near you that carries sheet music, contact fluteworld.com or Eble Music (319) 338-0313 (eble.com) and they can help you.

Not all pieces are currently in print. Some exist only in libraries or were mentioned in a publication as existing. We have given as much information as was available about the piece.

Instrumentation Category

When searching for pieces by instrumentation, be aware that some instruments are categorized under a general heading. Violin is found under strings, French horn under brass. The instrumentation categories are listed alphabetically in one field in the catalogue — the complete alphabetical list is as follows:

afl alto flute (1 or more)
bfl bass flute (1 or more)
brass trumpet, trombone, French horn etc.
chorus SATB or any combination
electronics tape recorder, electric piano etc.
fl flute (1 or more)
guitar
harp
keyboard piano, harpsichord, organ, celeste
misc miscellaneous - narrators, dancers etc.
orch orchestra (uses afl unless bfl specfied)
perc percussion of all kinds
picc piccolo (1 or more)
strings violin, viola, cello, bass
voice soloists of all ranges
woodwinds clarinet, sax, oboe etc.

For example, if you are looking for pieces written for alto flute and guitar, you would look for "afl guitar". Pieces with guitar in which the alto flute doubles on flute are also listed under "afl guitar".

If you want to find a piece for flute, alto flute and guitar, (3 players), this piece would be found under "afl fl guitar."

Instrument Abbreviations

The abbreviations that indicate exactly which instruments are needed to perform the piece are explained below.

A slash between two or more instruments means one person playing two or more instruments. An instrument in parentheses means the part could also be played on that instrument.

In some listings a series of numbers appears instead of instrument abbreviations. This is just a shortened way this publisher used to indicate multiple instruments in a large work. Numbers following the abbreviation for flute indicate how many oboes, clarinets, and bassoons there are. Brass and strings can also be shown this way.
